Ezra says "I hope I’m not being paranoid, but could sellers of office space list their properties using Imperial (along with Imperial descriptions) and then simply add the cost per square meter in parentheses? "

Unfortunately the majority show imperial only. However I have seen examples like the way you describe above. The problem is getting people to stop using imperial - until we crack this one - until we make people prefer metric - I believe that this sort of ridiculous practice will continue regardless of whether groups like LACORS say it's right OR wrong.

(Basically, bury the metric in their advertising but technically meet the letter of the law.)

It's my hope that estate agents, if forced to do the right thing and price property in metric, might realise that it's pointless and confusing to advertise in imperial... sometime in the near future we'll start to see warehouses and offices advertised by the square metre as this is how businesses will be comparing properties. This might just feed over into the domestic housing market and the sale of land which for some reason is still advertised by the acre.

On the other hand the use of square feet might just continue in advertising... like Fahrenheit and the lb, feet can be easilly made to make something look bigger and cheaper than something advertised in metric!

It is already mandatory that metric units be used in the HIP (Home Information Pack). This includes square metres for floor area and watts for predicted energy consumption rate. Unfortunately when estate angents display the HIP Energy Rating, they only show the rating on a scale "A" to "F" without the actual figures.

This is welcome news and and excellent persistent follow-up work on the part of the UKMA.

The one part of the letter I note that I deem unfortunate is that descriptions of dimensions need not be metric. Thus, a house or an office can be described using feet or yards because the property is not being sold, leased, or rented per unit area.

I presume that won't change before road signs get converted, namely, before the UK gets a government truly committed to finishing metrication.

Nonetheless, the UKMA's dogged efforts to get LACORS to clarify its position on transactions based on unit area (or volume) is a big step forward. Let's see how the TSOs respond!

I now suggest we aim our efforts on getting people to prefer the use of metres over 'feet' so that estate agents etc change their way of working.
